Apart from the very full academic program associated with the South Africa campus, there is ample time for fun as well. Most weekends include excursions of one kind or another, some of which are optional extras to be paid for by the students, while others are included in the program’s costs.
Very popular excursions out of the Pietermaritzburg campus are the two-day safari to Nambiti Game Reserve, the Karkloof Canopy Tour, visits to Durban’s famous beaches, and hiking in the mountains. Over the years we have experimented with different hiking trails and our current favourite is a hike in the magnificent Sani Pass area. This pass links South Africa with land-locked Lesotho, and the area has breathtaking views. Students experience some of these as they climb on a guided hike to view some of the San Bushmen rock paintings in this area. This excursion is included in the costs of the South Africa semester.
