The Pietermaritzburg program has included two key elements from its very beginning; that is, a History & Culture Battlefields Tour and a hike into the nearby Drakensberg mountains. Unfortunately, deteriorating road conditions, as well as other factors, have limited both of these in recent semesters, so it was decided to make a change from Fall 2017.
These two parts of the Pietermaritzburg program were rolled into one exciting weekend at the Drakensville Environmental Center, right next to the famed Drakensberg “Amphitheatre”. The weekend included abseiling, a chapel around a bonfire, a day-long hike to a beautiful waterfall, plus a trip to the Spioenkop battle site from the 2nd Anglo-Boer war. The hike was a challenge but the students loved it!
